A common theme in Lovecraft’s work was the protagonists suffering dreams and nightmares of monsters, an underwater city called “R’lyeh” and an evil sleeping god named “Cthulhu”. In this image I wanted to depict the creature Cthulhu and an unfortunate dreamer walking from the creature’s maw, I wanted to make the human figure in a place of danger, but be safe as well, as commonly in Lovecraft’s stories these people dreamed because they were becoming one of the hideous monsters (much like in “Shadow over Innsmouth” as well as “The Call of Cthulhu”) but also I wanted to emphasise a feature of Cthulhu that is described in the stories, that merely looking at Cthulhu can drive the onlooker mad, or kill them to try and represent this I used vibrant bright colours to make the creature look manic.
