Leper

This piece is inspired by H.P Lovecraft’s short story “Shadow over Innsmouth” in which the inhabitants began to transform to amphibious monsters mentioned in his stories as “The Innsmouth look”. In this piece I wanted to depict the slow and ugly change in order to create an eerie and frightening piece. The colours and costume on the figure were chosen to emphasise the idea that the character is sick or infectious as well as to show his nautical routes as the fictional town of innsmouth is a fishing community. A few more subtle features of the painting should be taken into consideration, Innsmouth is a dangerous and destitute place, and readers might identify this through the town’s empty street and through the wire fencing being damaged. To also emphasise H.P Lovecraft’s common theme of other-worldly beings I included the moon and made it enlarged and quite unnatural
